When we walked in the door of Great Harvest Bread Company at 7am, the air was filled with a crisp mouth watering scent of fresh cinnamon bread right out of the oven.
Last week I had the opportunity to photograph a wonderful local Maplewood company with my intern, James, from MRH. Being a business owner myself, I love being able to talk with other business owners and learn about their business. This local business just happened to be filled with wonderful smells, great tastes, and wonderful staff.
When we walked in the door of Great Harvest Bread Company at 7am, the air was filled with a crisp mouth watering scent of fresh cinnamon bread right out of the oven. In the hour that we spent watching these bread makers weigh 30 pounds of dough, knead, mix, dip in toppings and bake it was absolutely amazing!
I went back later that day to pick up our loaves to take to the studio. Over the past school year, James has had opportunity to photograph milk, babies, clothing, jewelry, headshots, and sports. Next on our list to building his portfolio was food! We had a great time getting the scene set up to give this bread a delicious and tasteful appearance.
After a few tweaks to our lighting and bringing out the reflector to give the bread a lovely golden glow we were ready to begin. If you have ever dabbled in the field of food photography you know that it is not as simple as just clicking a button on your camera. You have to make the food look its finest. This includes fluffing and dressing up the bread to make it look appealing to the camera. In fact, most of the time real food is not actually used. Ever seen a photograph of a delicious scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled in heavenly chocolate syrup? I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the ice cream is probably mashed potatoes…. And that heavenly chocolate syrup – is actually motor oil. Sorry to ruin your appetites – but real ice cream melts and real chocolate syrup just doesn’t hold its shape or color very well in the eye of the camera. It was a lot of fun teaching these tips and tricks to James.
In the end we got some wonderful shots and are very excited to share these delicious breads with you. Be sure to stop by Great Harvest Bread Company to try some of their delicious breads, cookies, egg muffins, scones, or anything you could want for the perfect breakfast or snack!
