Let’s be honest — who likes to pump? When we do need to pump, it is important that we consider the best option for our needs. The pump should be efficient and comfortable.
Why choose a hospital grade pump?
The FDA classifies and regulates all breast pumps. The FDA classifies electric breast pumps into two main groups, single-user and multi-user. Most retail electric breast pumps are single-user. Single-user pumps can never be shared, borrowed or even returned to a retailer. Infectious diseases including HIV and hepatitis may be spread through the sharing of single-user breast pumps.
Only multi-user breast pumps — like PJ’s Comfort® — are specifically designed to decrease the risk of contamination and re-infection, and are safe to be used by more than one person in the hospital setting, at work, or at home. The industry term “hospital-grade” is often used to describe an FDA-regulated multi-user electric breast pump such as PJ’s Comfort®.
Hospital grade pumps contain higher quality motors which are the best choice for moms:
- who need help establishing a milk supply,
- who are separated from their baby for an extended period of time,
- who have a baby who cannot adequately latch and/or transfer milk, or
- who have long-term supply concerns.
So why did we choose PJ’s Comfort by Limerick?
It is an entirely different method of pumping — the action used to express the milk is very different than the method of the Medela Pump In Style that almost everyone is familiar with. It doesn’t pull and tug your nipples like a press. The way the sof-touch cups work is that they create compression on the breast in addition to suctioning the milk from the breast (called cycle and vacuum), similar to how your child actually nurses. It is comfortable, extremely lightweight and quick to set up and use.
